So often as Believers we can take something from the Word and create the next grand entry on the list of longest standing traditions that have absolutely nothing to do with God. One in particular is the sacred cow known as communion. Throughout my life as a Believer I have often wondered about this long standing annual, or semi-annual, practice of consuming stale wafers and grape juice that’s so old it emulates a sharp brandy. However, the more time I spend with The Father the more it is revealed that much of what we see transpiring within the walls of the church is rooted deeper in ignorance than it is in truth. Which brings me back to the point of this article, what exactly is the purpose of communion? Let’s get into it.

“The Bread”

In Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians, chapter 11 specifically, he mentions the last supper regarding Jesus’ statement referencing the bread & wine and what they represented (1). Chapter 11 verse 24 gives us this text: “Take, eat, this is my body, which is broken for you; this do in remembrance of me”. If we conduct a proper research of the word “eat” in this text we find that the word used is Strong’s number G5315. It is the Greek word—φάγω. This is phágō in its transliterated form and pronounced in American English as FAH-goh. The word is used in this scripture to mean “to eat or consume a thing”. What exactly are we consuming? We are consuming the full embodiment of Jesus meaning all that He is, all that He has, all that He can be. We are accepting the full benefit of why His body was broken. Nothing that took place during His conversation with the disciples was without purpose. He broke the bread to symbolize his body being broken & sacrificed, and the fact He did that part first was also not at random. According to the article—“The Steps In Making A Blood Covenant” by William Handschumacher the first action in a blood covenant is the sacrificing of an animal—usually a bull, goat or lamb(Jesus is The Lamb of God)—that is split down the middle into two halves. Afterwards each participant walks amongst the blood between the two halves and afterwards they exchange coats (3). This walking between the halves was foreshadowed when God & Jesus performed it as God made covenant with Abraham with God represented by the Smoking Oven & Jesus represented by The Burning Torch—Genesis 15:17 (4). By the way the participants each represent their perspective groups and are the best of the best out of those groups. Jesus was the best of the human race and the other participant was God the Father, need I say more? That exchange represents each party stating—”everything I am and everything I represent now belongs to you (3).”

“The Wine”

In 1 Corinthians 11:25 Paul then writes that Jesus stated: “This cup is the new testament in my blood; as often as you drink it, do this in remembrance of me” (1). The word ‘drink’ here is Strong’s number G4095; originally πίνω and transliterated as pinō with American English pronunciation PEE-no. It literally and figuratively means to imbide, to absorb or receive into the soul. This again represents that we, the human race, were receiving something as a result of what was about to transpire. In regards to the steps of a blood covenant the wine represents the walk of blood & the cut of the covenant. During the walk of blood (where the afore mentioned participants walk a specific path between the halves) each individual stops in the middle and pronounce the parameters of the covenant. This includes the benefits, what’s required of each party and the consequences should any party fail at their part of the agreement (3). Remember, a covenant is an “agreement” which for us means God has a part and we have a part. Our part is obedience so trust me we have the easy part. Now the cut of the covenant is where it gets interesting. During this moment a knife is used to make a cut on the palms or the wrists of each participant (if you’re picturing two nails in His hands & feet and a piercing in the side then you understand) and they engage in a handshake allowing their free flowing blood to intermingle (3). And for us (the human race), paying the required price that was needed to satisfy the broken law of sin & death.

“The True Meaning”

With that understanding of those two elements we now can take a look at the last supper as a whole which actually represents the final step in a blood covenant—The Covenant Meal. This meal was often one of ‘bread and wine’ with each participant feeding the other indicating again—all that I am is now coming into you (3). If you notice that narrative does not change it is because it is foundational in understanding your relationship with God. The covenant is what establishes your newly restored relationship with God that is based on the God kind of love—Hessed (חֶסֶד) in Hebrew & Agape & Greek. This love simply says “I will never leave you nor forsake you”. It also implies mercy and kindness and states that ‘no matter how many times you betray me I will never betray you’. And that ladies and gentlemen is the God kind of Love. The true meaning of communion is about conversing and fellowshipping with like minded Believers, and when doing so making sure to do it in remembrance of what it cost to restore your relationship with God. Make sure you remember that as you enjoy the benefits of this covenant you remember that it cost the best of us His life. Remember that without His sacrifice, you would have no covenant and hell would be your destination. Communion is not about stale bread and wafers nor outdated grape juice. It’s a continual fellowship both physically & spiritually with other believers and a commitment to never forget what it took to restore you to God. As always, remember this—you can choose to believe or not believe whatever you desire, just make sure you know what the outcome of that choice will be.

Be Blessed!
